Experience

I want to tutor because I love helping students learn, and learn to love learning. I have experience tutoring students in middle school, high school, and college. I scored a 660 on the verbal section of the SAT; there was no writing section yet when I took it, but I've tutored students in the SAT. I've also administered the test to both general education and special education populations. As part of my MA degree, I took a seminar in teaching writing that involved studying pedagogical strategies and designing a course, complete with six lesson plans, rubrics, handouts, and a syllabus. In addition to studying fiction, I also studied poetry, linguistics, and literary theory. As part of my graduate certificate in teaching composition, I took a 4-credit course on teaching that involved additional pedagogical study and the creation of a teaching portfolio (CV, syllabi, lesson plans, assignments and rubrics). I observed a freshman composition class and am currently observing a sophomore research and public speaking seminar, working one-on-one with students and planning and teaching lessons when granted time from the professor. As a culmination to this program, I will teach a freshman composition class as an adjunct professor in fall 2018. I also have two years' experience working as a special education paraprofessional. I've also written professionally for over ten years.

Hobbies

I hold a third-degree black belt in Chinese Kempo. As part of my pursuit of this hobby, I taught martial arts on a daily basis for over five years, instructing students ages 3 to 65+. I actively write, edit, and seek publication for my own fiction. I've had short stories published in several literary magazines.
